When you finally realize the depth of your love for your pet, then it may already be too late to preserve their DNA. Even though DNA may be preserved from animals after their death - in some cases, we have been able to develop cell lines from deceased pets up to six days after their death - in other cases, we have failed to preserve DNA from pets that had been gone for as little as one day.

So to increase the chance for success for your pet, collect the tissue sample now and start laboratory processing in a timely manner. The sooner that tissue is collected and processed the greater the chance for establishing a viable cell line. Success depends upon temperature, time, tissue handling, and your contacting PERPETUATE immediately at 808-989-2028.

Emergency Steps

In the case of the sudden death of your pet, you should:

  • Place and keep the dead animal in a sanitary cool environment at refrigerated temperatures between 35° and 45°F (2° to 5°C) until tissue samples are collected.
  • DO NOT BURY the animal.
  • Contact PERPETUATE immediately at 808-989-2028 for tissue collection and shipment details.

Euthanized Pets

Prior to euthanizing a pet, please contact PERPETUATE to arrange for a DNA Collection Kit, which the veterinarian will use to collect tissue samples. This will ensure the best chances for a viable cell line from your pet.

What if the process fails?

If it's not possible to obtain a viable culture from your pet’s tissue samples, the total charge will be reduced to $1100.

REMEMBER

The best way to preserve viable DNA from your pet is to collect and process tissue while the animal is alive!
